Shield Yourself With Half a Date

Small and big good deeds across Cambridge, made easy to join. Teach Quran to children, clean a community hall, cook for a charity bazaar, serve breakfast to students, or spend an hour with a neighbour. Pick what fits your time.

Organising a good cause? Find volunteers for it

Free, always. Anyone in Cambridge can join, and you never need an app to ask.

Protect yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date. And whoever cannot find even that, then with a good word.

اتَّقُوا النَّارَ وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ

Sahih al-Bukhari 1417, Sahih Muslim 1016. Yarım hurma is Turkish for “half a date”.

No Task Is Too Small

A good deed does not have to be grand. Fifteen minutes can make someone’s week easier, and a few pairs of hands can make a whole event happen.

  • Teaching Quran to children
  • Cooking for a charity bazaar
  • Serving breakfast to students
  • Cleaning a community hall
  • A science afternoon with children
  • Running a stall
  • Designing a poster
  • Helping someone with a computer
  • Carrying shopping to the door
  • Tidying a front garden
  • A cup of tea and a chat

The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most constant, even if they are small.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6464, Sahih Muslim 783

How It Works

Pick a task. Do the good. Earn the reward. Help Cambridge flourish.

For Volunteers

  1. Pick a taskJoin with your phone number and choose what fits your time and skills, from a quarter of an hour to a whole Saturday. “Not this time” is always fine.
  2. Do the goodTurn up, follow the organiser on the day, and do it kindly and simply. Serve, smile, leave. Read the community rules.
  3. Earn the rewardThe reward is with Allah. Each finished task also adds dates (hurma) to your private record: a quiet note of good done, with no rankings and no badges.
  4. Help Cambridge flourishSmall deeds add up. Together they make the city kinder, one task at a time.

For Organisers and Anyone Who Needs a Hand

  1. Tell usAbout a good cause, an event that needs hands, or help you need yourself. By phone, WhatsApp or the short form.
  2. A coordinator gets back to youThey talk it through with you and agree what is needed, when and where.
  3. We find volunteersThe task goes to volunteers who fit it. Before a visit you know who is coming.
  4. The good gets doneFree, always. Afterwards, tell us how it went if you like. One question, nothing more.

Four Ways to Reach Us

Ask for a hand, or tell us about an activity that needs volunteers. Choose whichever is easiest for you.

Phone

Number coming soon

A coordinator answers, or calls you back the same day.

WhatsApp

Number coming soon

Write in your own words. A volunteer coordinator reads every message and replies.

Someone else can ask

A friend, a relative, a carer or a community group can contact us for you, or for the people they look after.

Short web form

A few simple questions, for help you need or a good cause that needs volunteers. Takes about three minutes.

Yarım Hurma is not an emergency service. In an emergency, call 999. For urgent health advice, call NHS 111.

Safe, Private, Free

Approved volunteers

A coordinator approves every volunteer. Anyone who goes inside a home has an Enhanced DBS check and a reference, and is never alone there unless that was arranged with you.

Children are always supervised

Children’s activities are run and supervised by their organiser. Volunteers are never left alone with children.

Your details stay private

Volunteers see only what a task needs, and only when they need it. Records are anonymised 24 months after we last speak. Privacy notice.

You know who is coming

Before a home visit we tell you the volunteer’s name, show their photo and give their Yarım Hurma volunteer ID.

We Never Ask for Money

No donations, no payments, no fees. No money passes through Yarım Hurma, and volunteers never handle anyone’s money. If anyone asks you for money in our name, please tell us through the help page straight away.

Fifteen Minutes Is Enough

Join the volunteers of Cambridge. Pick tasks that fit around work, study and family, and bring what you are good at. Every finished task earns dates (hurma), a quiet record of good done.

A Cambridge Local Community Initiative

Yarım Hurma is organised by people of Cambridge who want to do good together. Volunteer coordinators look after every request, choose which activities we take on, and make sure each one is safe and well run.
