Community Rules
Every volunteer agrees to these before their first task. They keep the people we help safe, keep volunteers safe, and keep the work what it should be: kind, sincere and simple.
The three rules that matter most
Serve, Smile, Leave
Do the task kindly and simply, then go. No leaflets, no preaching, no talk of donations. The good deed is the whole message, and it is not done for show.
Never Alone With Children
Children’s activities are always run and supervised by their organiser. You are never alone with a child, and never alone in someone’s home unless the task says so and a coordinator arranged it.
No Photos of People or Homes
Never photograph people, children or the inside of a home. A photo of finished work, like a clean hall or a tidy hedge, is fine if the task asks for one.
Kindness and Respect
- Treat everyone with kindness and respect: people of every faith and none, every background and every age.
- Respect people’s homes, routines, pace and privacy. They decide how things are done.
- Be patient with each other. Every volunteer is giving their own time.
Before the Task
- Only take what you can really do. "Not this time" is always a fine answer.
- Can’t make it? Withdraw early in the app so someone else can go.
- Take only tasks that match your checks. The app will not offer you tasks inside people’s homes until your DBS check and reference are confirmed.
- Read the task’s note and bring what it asks for, including your Yarım Hurma volunteer ID.
On the Day
- Be on time. Introduce yourself by name and show your volunteer ID before anything else.
- Follow the organiser or coordinator on the day. At an event, they lead and you help.
- Stay with the task you agreed. If someone asks for more, tell the coordinator rather than promising it yourself.
Staying Safe
- Never be alone in someone’s home unless the task says so and a coordinator arranged it.
- Never be alone with children. Children’s activities are always supervised by the organiser.
- No ladders above head height, no electrics or gas, nothing heavier than you can lift safely. If in doubt, stop and ask.
Money and Gifts
- Never handle anyone’s money: no cash, cards, PINs, bank details or shopping on their account.
- Never ask for or accept money, tips or donations. A cup of tea is welcome; gifts are kindly declined.
- Do not borrow, lend or sell anything to the people you help.
Privacy
- Never share anyone’s details, and do not save their number. You see it on the day only, for that task only.
- No photos of people, children or homes.
- Do not post about visits, the people you help or where they live on social media. Do not contact anyone outside a task; the coordinator arranges any more help.
If You Are Worried
- If anyone is in immediate danger, call 999 first. For urgent health advice, call NHS 111.
- If something worries you about anyone’s safety or wellbeing, tell your coordinator the same day, in the app or by phone. Do not investigate yourself.
- If you feel unsafe, leave politely and tell the coordinator. You never have to finish a task that does not feel right.
Quietly and Sincerely
- Your dates are private: only you and the coordinators see them. There are no rankings and no badges to share.
- No task is too small. Fifteen minutes, done well and often, is the whole idea.
- Coordinators may pause or end a volunteer’s place if these rules are not kept. This protects everyone, including you.
For the People We Help: What You Can Expect
You are always in charge of your own home and your own event. These promises come with every task.
- Before a home visit we tell you who is coming: their name, photo and Yarım Hurma volunteer ID. Ask to see the ID at the door.
- No one comes inside alone unless it was arranged with you, and you can always say no to anyone coming in.
- Nobody will ask you for money, bank details or a donation. If anyone does, it is not us: please call ustell us through the help page.
- No leaflets, no preaching and no photos of you, your children or your home.
- Organisers who bring an activity name a lead for the day and supervise any children’s activity themselves; volunteers help under their lead.
- If anything about a task was not right, tell us. You can also read our privacy notice or get help and support.
